The Virginia state flag has a blue background depicting the state seal in the center. The state seal has an ornamental border around an image of Virtus, the genius of the Commonwealth, dressed as an Amazon, with a spear facing down in one hand, with a sheathed sword in the other. The left foot of Virtus rests on the body of Tyranny, with his fallen crown nearby. The top of the seal has the word Virginia, while the bottom has the Latin motto: Sic Semper Tyrannis (Thus always to tyrants).
